Newborn Portraiture is a lifetime treasure.
With a Newborn you have one chance to capture their ‘newness’ before is passes you by. So with all the photographers in the market, you can call and hire anyone you want, really. But saying that, Newborn photography is not for every photographer – even if they do offer it. Most people don’t realize all the behind the scenes and effort that goes into a newborn session – they simply see the beautiful end result, which is a lot more than just a nice camera ;).
I decided to write this blog to give you a bit more understanding in to why you should hire a professional – why you should hire me – Elize Mare Photography 🙂
There are A LOT of reasons, but I’m going to stick to just a few, otherwise I’ll have to write a book!
- YOU, the parents of this new little life is going to be in the pictures as well. And TRUST me, these pictures will be a good picture of the new Mom & Dad in the most flattering way. Even if you are tired, and overwhelmed with motherhood
- .SAFETY. This is really a very important reason, and for me one of the most important ~ qualifications for a newborn photographer is their experience in handling a newborn and posing them safely. You are handing over your brand new baby to a photographer to hold, soothe, pose in and out of props. You need to trust that this person knows what they are doing. Don’t be afraid to ask about that – get references from previous new parents if you have to.For example, not a lot of people know that this image is actually a composition of two images together, have a look below the final edit to see how I got to it:

- DETAILS. Yest, it’s true.. it’s all in the details. Colors matching, blankets smoothed out to show minimum wrinkles, newborn outfit fitting nicely, the light falling through the window is perfect (I do not use flash photography with a newborn, natural light is SO much softer), fingers are moved and placed untill I’m happy with the look, and most of all baby looks relaxed and calm.
4.KNOWLEDGE AND EQUIPMENT. Most of my clients own a DSLR 😉 but It’s not the camera or the great lens… it is the eye of the artist and the knowledge.
Not only do we know how to use our camera to get the proper exposure, focus and composition, we also know how to light and pose our clients (even the newborns) properly to get that picture perfect moment.
And should for some reason this little person be wide awake – posing them in the correct manner would also make stunning images.
Hiring a professional is so much more than a fancy camera. It’s the experience, the training, the knowledge of lighting and with newborns, it’s also about their comfort, their safety and the understanding of what makes your baby happy, peaceful and content enough to capture those beautiful images.
Newborns are only newborns for a handful of days, 2 weeks at most. Much like wedding photography, you simply cannot recapture these first moments. Don’t let that time slip by without documenting those first yawns, stretches and smirks, that belly button that hasn’t quite fallen off and that flaky new skin.
The investment is worth it and you’ll be so glad you did.
To end off with a little humor I borrowed two images from the internet – Nailed it! or not! With my image added to show the difference:
